Hydra Island is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea.

It is separated from the Peloponnese by a narrow strip of water. In ancient times, the island was known as Hydrea, which was a reference to the springs on the island. Hydra has a strong maritime culture due to its numerous bays and natural harbors. The island is a popular yachting destination and depends upon tourism.

Evidences of farming from the second half of the third millennium BCE were found on the small flat areas that are not visible from the sea. Hydra Island served as a kingdom maritime base on the Greek peninsula. Hydra was populated during the Byzantine Era. Vases and coins have been discovered in the area of Episkopi. Between 1204-1566 the island belonged to Venice. From 1566 to 1821 (nominally 1829), it was part of the Ottoman Empire. When the Greek War of Independence broke out, Hydra Island‘s contribution of 150 ships played a critical role in the fight against the Turks.
