The Danube River Delta is the 2nd largest wetland in Europe and the largest reed bed in the world.
It was formed 6,500 years ago where the Danube pours into the Black Sea. Just before , it splits into three branches, the Chilia, Sulina, and Sfântu Gheorghe. The approximate surface area is 4,152 km², and of that, 3,446 km² are in Romania. A total area of 679,000 ha of the delta is under legal protection including floodplains and marine areas. A big portion of this (312,400 ha) was designated in 1991 as a World Natural Heritage Site.
